It’s hard to think about the cold with it so hot right now, but the cold will be coming again on the calendar before we know it. When it’s really cold outside, people tend to stay indoors and be less involved in life outside the house. My grandparents would go to bed much earlier in winter, simply because there was less light and less to do. All of the good creation also stops and waits for the spring.

In the same way, right now we have to be less involved with the outside world. I believe that we are living in the last days of history, and Jesus is coming soon. However, there is a temptation to withdraw our hearts from others. In Matthew chapter 24, Jesus described the last days like this, “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will wax cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.” With all the trouble and wickedness in the world in these days, we are sorely tempted to throw up our hands and say, “I don’t care.” But in these days, people need to see the love of Jesus all the more. We look for ways, over the Internet and in person when we can, to show God’s love to the those in our path.
When I was little (back in the stone age of the 1980’s), there was a cold and snowy winter day, and I desperately begged my parents to play outside. At that time (even to this day), you could dial 726-8211 and get the temperature. I dialed over and over and over, hoping to convince them it was warming up. It did, to a balmy 15 degrees. So, I didn’t make it out that day, but it wasn’t because I didn’t try. I had to wait for my parents, and some day later they let me get in the snow. May we have that same “burning” desire in our hearts to go out into a cold world as God leads, and that we won’t let our hearts freeze to the suffering out there. We can send out loving words and actions, as we have the ability, and show the warmth of Jesus’ saving love.
