Two Logan County High School cross country athletes have signed to run in college this spring.

Gage Cousineau last week with Berea College and Meredith Johnson signed earlier this spring and will be running at Lindsey Wilson on a full ride scholarship.

"From what I have been told, Meredith will be the first female runner to run cross country at the collegiate level from Logan County," said LCHS cross country coach Joe Dan Laster. "I believe that is something worth celebrating. I have no doubt that both runners will continue to bring pride and joy to our program and to their families. Meredith and Gage, I believe I can speak for the team when I say we wish you nothing but the best. You two led this program with great pride and determination. The younger athletes on the team had two fine role models in you two. This last part I'm saying on behalf of myself. Chris C., Mike, Alicia, and Chris J. you all did a fantastic raising these two. I could not have done this without all of you. Thank you for everything."

Laster said Cousineau and Johnson have been just two of the many blessings his program has had in recent years.

"Over my three years of being the cross country coach I have been blessed - blessed with amazing athletes, amazing parents, a patient administration, and a very patient and understanding wife," Laster said. "When I took the job, I was asked my goals. I had three. One, to continue the tradition of success that the program had. Two, to get the athletes to achieve things they thought they couldn't do. Three, to get as many athletes to state each year as possible. Getting kids into college/running in college wasn't in my original goals. I realize now how short sighted my third goal was. I've since added a fourth goal of getting as many as I can into college on some type of scholarship. I currently have two former runners running at the collegiate level. and Devin Roche is running cross country and track at Brescia University. I regret not doing something like this when they signed to run in college."

Laster is already looking to add more runners to the cross country team next season. Any child in fourth grade or above in a Logan County school is eligible to be a part of the team. To contact Laster about running on the team, send an email to

"We had a lot of veteran runners graduate this year," Laster said. "If your child hasn't found their sport, please think about giving cross country a shot. I'll be glad to answer any and all questions."
