Last week the Russellville Independent School Board voted unanimously to name the track at Russellville High School to honor longtime coach and educator Matt Tipton.

He was a teacher and coach in the district for 42 years and coached the girls' track team every year he was employed.

"We are very happy and proud to honor the legacy of coach Matt Tipton for his tremendous contributions to the Russellville Independent school district over 42 years," Russellville superintendent Bart Flener said. "Coach Tipton impacted many lives for the better and his former students and student-athletes still speak of his impact on their lives frequently."

The Lady Panther track team was region champs five times under Tipton, region runner-up seven times and state runner-up twice. He also coached many individual state champions as well.

In addition to coaching track, Tipton also coached boys track, boys and girls basketball, football and tennis.

When he retired from education, Tipton was serving as assistant principal at Stevenson Elementary, a position he had held there for several years.

A ceremony is being planned for this spring to officially name the track in Tipton's honor.
