Davin Holloway makes a throw from third base on Friday night at Russellville High School. The Panthers beat Caverna 7-2.

The Panthers picked up the first win of the season during the 2019 home-opener on Friday. Russellville won the game 7-2 on a perfect evening for baseball.

Russellville got on the board early. In the bottom of the first inning, Jesus Zamarripa walked and came around to score. It was 1-0 after one inning of play. The Panthers added another run in the bottom of the second.

The score remained 2-0 until Caverna managed to score in the fourth inning. The Panthers scored the third run on a wild pitch in the 5th inning, making it 3-1. Still a close game, Caverna made it 3-2 after scoring on an error. That would be as close as the visitors would get.

In the bottom of the sixth, Russellville broke it open. Two walks and an RBI single by Gram Humphrey put the Panthers up 4-2. With two outs, Caverna intentionally walked Zamarripa to get to Daylan Roberts with bases loaded. A wild pitch made it 5-2. Roberts doubled to right field on the next pitch and cleared the bases. 7-2 was the final after Humphrey shut down Caverna in 1-2-3 fashion from the mound to end the game.

In addition to the double by Roberts, Jesus Zamarripa poped a triple. Gram Humphrey and Khristian McCall each hit singles.

Daylan Roberts threw four innings from the hill. Roberts had five strikeouts and allowed one unearned run. Humphrey came in to close it out, tossing three innings. He fanned six and also gave up an unearned run.

The Panthers will play at Franklin-Simpson tonight.
