The Russellville High School football team hung with the defending Class 2A state champs for a while on Friday night, but wound up with a 41-9 loss at historic Rhea Stadium.

The Panthers were tied at 6-6 after the first quarter thanks to a 31-yard touchdown pass from Lennon Ries to Jackson Hampton, but that turned out to be the only touchdown of the game for RHS.

Somerset led 34-6 at the half as the only other score for the Panthers was a fourth quarter field goal by Dustin Brown.

Ries led Russellville with 58 rushing yards to go alone with his 127 passing yards.

Jovari Gamble had 57 yards on 16 rushing attempts and 31 yards on a pair of receptions.

Hampton led Russellville in receiving yards with 47 on two receptions, including the first quarter touchdown.

Chevis Elliott led the defense with eight solo tackles and an interception.

Russellville (1-2) will play its first Class A, District 1 game of the season this week at Fulton County. Fulton County is winless on the year, losing all three of its games to three teams all from Tennessee.

Logan County (1-1) was off last week after having a game canceled due to COVID-19.

The Cougars will be back in action this Friday at home against Hopkinsville.
