Logan County Attorney Joe Ross officially filed his paperwork Tuesday to run for Circuit Judge.

He initially informed the magistrates and Judge Executive Logan Chick in May that he intended to run for circuit judge later this year. Current Circuit Judge Tyler Gill is retiring at the end of July and there will be an election to fill the vacancy as part of the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019.

"This afternoon I filed a Notice of Intent with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance to run for the office of Circuit Judge for Logan and Todd Counties at such time as a vacancy becomes available," Ross said in a statement Tuesday. "This step is necessary to both receive and spend funds for purposes of an election prior to the office becoming available. Along with the letter announcing my intent, a Political Organization Registration form and a Waiver From Filing Candidate Election Finance Statement was simultaneously filed. As this is a Judicial race, Judicial ethics play a role in the campaign process. Judicial ethics in the state of Kentucky prohibit a candidate for judge from accepting campaign contributions directly and therefore a campaign committee, separate and apart from the individual candidate, must be set up in order to comply. The name of my campaign committee is the 'Committee to Elect Ross Circuit Judge.' The Committee Chairperson is Elizabeth (Gill) Teel, a native of Allensville who now resides in Auburn. The Committee Treasurer is Suzanne Marshall of Russellville."

Gill's current term as Circuit Judge is set to run through 2022.

"Though Judge Gill has announced his intent to retire effective July 31st, the next election currently set is to be held in November of 2022," Ross added. "Therefore, until the special election for the vacancy is certified, 2022 is the election year referenced in my filing."

Ross is the first candidate to officially file paperwork to run for the office. Local attorney Joe Hendricks also announced his plan to run in May.

Ross is currently serving in his third term as Logan County Attorney.
