It was a beautiful day Wednesday for a grand opening celebration for the new senior center in Russellville. The idea of a new center has been discussed for years and is now finally come to fruition.

A very large crowd gathered to listen to special guest speakers for the event who included Dr. Donald Butler, of Community Action of Southern Kentucky, Inc.

"I am pleased to be here on behalf of our Community Action Board of Directors and staff for this special day," said Dr. Butler. "We want to thank Mayor Mark Stratton and the Russellville City Council and Judge-Executive Logan Chick and the Logan County Fiscal Court for supporting the renovation of this building for our use as a senior center and community services program office. We are delighted to be a partner."

Dr. Butler went on to say that when he first learned about the proposed new center, he began to find out more about the library that once inhabited the building that is now the senior center. He mentioned coming across an article written by Evelyn Richardson in August 2017 which highlighted the 50-year celebration of the history of the library. "Evelyn did a great service to this community," said Dr. Butler.

Others thanked during Dr. Butler's speech included Senior Center Manager Christie Lashley, Community Services Coordinator Crystal Bell and each of the staff members and volunteers that serve Community Action.

Judge-Executive Chick and Mayor Stratton both spoke as well thanking past members of the court and council who played an intricate roll in getting the center open.

"This is an exciting time," said Mayor Stratton. "This is a place where the community can fellowship and I pray for everyone who enters through its doors."
