James L. “Jim” Wells, 82, of Owensboro, passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Hillcrest-Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation.

He was born in Muhlenburg County to the late Otha and Blanche (Hale) Wells.

Jim was a retired crane operator. Between Green River, Bethlehem and Jessup Steel Companies he accumulated 42 years of service. Jim also spent about 10 years of his retirement working as a security guard at Lowes.

Jim was a longtime and active member of Dawson Baptist Church in Philpot where he served as a deacon. Jim was a big NASCAR fan and enjoyed playing Rook. He was also an avid sportsman and spent many hours hunting and fishing with his sons and grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Melvin Wells; a sister, Myrtle Skaggs; and a daughter in law, Marilyn Wells.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 9 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Rev. Craig Bratcher and Dr. Joe Thomas will officiate. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. The committal service and burial will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Hannah M. Wells; sons, Dr. Ron G. Wells (Karen) of Alvaton, and Rick L. Wells (Kathy) of Owensboro; grandchildren, Kimberly Elliott (Mark) of Owensboro, Jeremy Wells (Amy) of Evansville, Ind., Adam Wells of Owensboro, Hannah Wells of Owensboro, Jill Herndon (Kevin) of Paducah, KY, Christie Witt (Jeff) of White House, Tenn., Liza Moberly of Bowling Green and Earl Moberly of Schochoh; 16 great grandchildren; and five nieces.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund at Dawson Baptist Church 5880 Highway 54 Philpot, KY 42366.
