What about the rights of Christians?

Dear Editor:

I’m writing in a response to the incident at Auburn School about the Gideon’s Bible. One person said it was taking away the rights of her child. What about the rights of the other children there? We as Christians should take a stand for God and our rights. This country and nation needs God more now than ever. Stand up for our children and God. Pay hard and spread his word. Read Hosea 4:1-3 & 6.

To be fair, not one person, as far as it was published, claimed that this was "taking away the rights" of their child. No one was attempting to deny the Gideons' from giving out Bibles - the parent and the Civil Liberties group were asking that it be done the correct way. To make this anything else is to misconstrue it. This is not punishment of Christians, this is protecting children from religious interference in the school setting.

As Christians (including myself here) we must be conscientious of the privilege we have in this country. We must not be so quick to mistake others calls for "equality" as somehow limiting our own rights. We must evaluate each claim for it's worth in the context of the rights of all. the rights of all are what is protected by the constitution, not just the rights of Christians. Further we must not mistake tradition with sanctity. One person wrote in to say that the Gideons' handing out Bibles was something that had been going on since "I was a child". Many things, both good and bad, have taken place for years. The fact that they have taken place does not make them right.
