Community Education’s spring class schedule has been finalized and is chock-full of interesting and informative classes.

“We’re offering two cooking classes — Cooking with Herbs and Authentic Hispanic Cooking — Beginning Crochet, Windows Movie Maker and Introduction to Excel, and we’re excited that the variety will give people a chance to shake off the winter blues and enjoy the new year more informed,” said Community Education Director Alicia Carmichael.

The classes are being offered in RussellvilleIndependent and Logan County schools.

Authentic Hispanic Cooking

Looking for a fun way to wind down your week and give your taste buds a thrill? Then this class is for you!

Elda Chavez, whose first language is Spanish and who teaches English as a Second Language at Stevenson Elementary School, would love to show you how to create authentic, popular Hispanic dishes.

The five-session class will begin with an introductory lesson on Friday, Feb. 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Logan County High School food lab. The hands-on cooking sessions will be in the lab on March 8, 15 and 22, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The sessions will end with a class in the lab on March 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

All ingredients will be provided by your instructor and you’ll get to savor your tasty treats.

Introduction to Excel

It seems like every other job advertisement you see these days stresses the need for the applicant to know Excel. Take this class, which will be taught by Diane Crawley, who has years of professional experience using Excel under her belt (and who also teaches math for Adult Education), and you’ll learn the basics of this in-demand computer skill.

The class will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25 and March 4 and 11 in the computer lab at Russellville High School.

Beginning Crochet

Have you always dreamt of curling up in a favorite chair and creating a colorful scarf or other treasure, but didn’t know how to begin?

If so, you’ll love this class, which will be perfect for those who’ve never picked up a crochet hood, or those who have a little knowledge of crochet techniques but want to learn more.

Under the instruction of Cheryl Kerchinski, director of the Community Action Russellville Senior Center, you’ll learn to make a scarf or simple dish towel. Build on those skills and you might find yourself whipping up handmade holiday gifts next year.

This class will be lots of fun for mothers and daughters to take together.

It will be in the art room at Stevenson Elementary School from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26 and March 5, 12 and 19.

Just bring your own light-colored yarn and an “H” or “I” crochet hook and you’ll be ready to go!

Windows Movie Maker

Take Windows Movie Maker and you’ll be able to turn precious home videos into movies. You’ll also learn to create and edit your own home videos.

Abbi Brown Lillard, who teaches several computer classes at Logan County High School, will instruct this class in room 226 at LCHS, through entrance #5 in back of the school, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26 and March 5, 12 and 19.

Night 1: Getting the Best Video

Night 2: How to Load Your Footage

Night 3: Editing Photos and Video Using Free Windows Movie Maker Software

Night 4: Completing Your Video

By the end of the sessions, you’ll have a completed video to share with your friends and family!

CLASS FEE: $40

Cooking with Herbs

In this exciting class, instructor Sharyl Markham, who also teaches English Language Learners/English as a Second Language for Adult Education, will teach you how to bring ordinary foods to life with herbs.

You’ll learn how to cook with leeks and fennel, how to make ordinary rice extraordinary, how to know which herbs go best with chicken and beef and much more.

The class will be Friday, April 12, 20 and 27 and May 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the food lab at Logan County High School.

All ingredients will be provided by your instructor and you’ll get to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
