District:

• Logan County Schools is among the sixteen Districts in GRREC and the six districts in OVEC who will benefit from the $40,000,000 Race to the Top Grant.

• The Kentucky Center for School Safety presented the Logan County School District with a Certificate of Achievement for over 500 online “Bully Cure” pledges signed during Kentucky Safe Schools Week.

• The Happy Feet Program, through the Rotary Club provided 300 pairs of shoes to Logan County students’ preschool through high school. This was the third year for Happy Feet and the second year for ‘Operation Warm’ which this year provided 244 students new coats. Rotary also provided dictionaries to all third graders in the county in December. This program has been done since 2006.

Adairville:

• Adairville School held its Winterfest on Friday, November 30, 2012. A good time was had by all as the PTO raised funds to support the school.

• Adairville School held a Primary Art Show on December 4, 2012.

• Adairville students participated in The Middle School Academic Fair.

• On December 4th, Adairville held its Middle School Band and Jazz Concert, and students demonstrated their progress to their families.

• FRYSC in cooperation with the Logan County Chamber of Commerce sponsored the School Challenge in conjunction with the Jesse James 5K run. Students from all Logan County Schools were challenged to participate at a discounted rate of $5 and the FRYSC obtained sponsors to cover T-shirts for each participant.

Auburn:

• Auburn School has been nominated by the KY Commissioner of Education, Terry Holliday, for the 2013 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award. The National Blue Ribbon School Program recognizes schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students’ levels of academic achievement. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program sets a standard of excellence for all schools striving for the highest level of academic achievement.

• Auburn Middle School will be featured in the online KY Teacher magazine (found on the KY Department of Education website) on December 18th for its success in meeting the needs of students within the GAP (GAP—low income, limited English proficiency, special education and minority students).

• Auburn hosted the regional Academic Team Sixth Grade Showcase on December 1st. Audrey Hagens placed 6th in Language Arts, Zakk Joiner placed 1st in Social Studies and 4th in science, Kate Malott placed 1st in Composition, Louis Scott placed 1st in Arts & Humanities and 3rd in Composition.

• Auburn’s KY Youth Assembly (KYA) attended the state KYA conference in Louisville on November 15-17. The entire Auburn KYA received an Outstanding Delegation Award. Joey Dilliha received an individual Outstanding Delegate Award.

• The Auburn’s KY Youth Assembly and Lego Robotics classes will be featured on the National Schools to Watch Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/SchoolsToWatch

• The Mighty Molar Dentistry Program was able to clean the teeth of almost 100 Auburn students on November 28-29.

• Auburn’s Middle School Band had nine students place in the 2013 All-District Band: Victoria Welch, Zoe Beasley, Logan Caudill, Jordan Hall, Brayden Yates, Baylor May, Angus Moore, John Mark Page and Jack Wright.

Chandlers:

• The Lexington Children’s Theater presented Aesop’s Fables to kindergarten through third grade students.

• State KPREP assessment results ranked Chandler’s School 24th in the state in the combined reading and math growth scores. Middle school reading scores ranked 46th in the state on reading growth percentage and ranked 20th in math.

Lewisburg:

• Lewisburg School and Family Resource Center held ‘Family Movie Night’ on November 16th. The evening’s activities consisted of door prizes, free books for students, free popcorn and cokes. Over 200 people were in attendance.

• Lewisburg Bands held its Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 6:00 pm. Bands played a selection of Christmas music to entertain the crowd. Special Guest Mr. Dayton, band director at Logan County High School, joined the bands in performing in several of the pieces.

• Lewisburg Jr. Beta Club held its 2nd Annual Arts/Crafts Showcase on Dec. 6th. Results were as follows:

Olmstead:

• Recently, Olmstead School sixth and seventh grade students read an abridged version of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Students Face-timed with staff from Orchard House in Concord, Massachusetts to celebrate the 180th birthday of Miss Alcott.

• Mr. Kemp presented Martha Riley with a plaque from Kentucky Center for Mathematics (KCM). She is now a KCM Intervention Specialist.

LCHS:

• The BRASS Towel Drive held by the Cougar Academy Advisory Council collected 278 towels and purchased another 100 with money donated. BRASS provides much needed help for abuse victims; people in our schools and in our town.
