Jana Hanks in Auburn wants to remind everyone that help collect aluminum can tabs that the deadline for this years donation is Friday, December 7. The office of Hanks Construction Company and East Logan Water District located at 399 East Main Street in Auburn (across from the American Legion) is the collection site for the can tabs and it has always been a true success. Jana continues to help raise money for Shriners Hospital for Children and has for the past several years and really enjoys making the donation to Shriners to help provide some extra things for the Cincinnati Burn Unit such as patient clothing, special wheelchairs, DVD players, magazine subscriptions, bingo games, Spanish board games, and holiday trees. The patients and their families derive much pleasure from all the extras that are purchased that is generated from the can tab program.

“It’s amazing to me just how many people do take time to collect the aluminum can tabs”, says Jana. We have people that have helped with this program now ever since we started it a number of years ago. There is rarely a day that goes by that someone doesn’t drop off their tabs for the collection. They come to us in gallon milk jugs, gallon size ziploc bags, Wal-Mart bags, shoe boxes, shopping bags, coffee cans and five gallon buckets. It does not matter what they are delivered in, as we bag them all up for the donation that we make annually in December to Shriners.

Please note that the silver tabs are the only pure aluminum tabs. The colored tabs are not pure aluminum due to the paint on them. It only takes a small effort to help contribute to such a worthy cause and all donations are very much appreciated. If you are not currently a can tab collector, now is the time to start. Tell your friends and family and co-workers to help save them and what a great cause they go for. For the past several years, Auburn has collected and donated a pick up truck load of can tabs and hope to continue the support of Logan County.

Tabs can be dropped off Monday through Friday at Hanks Construction Company/East Logan Water District office from 8 till 4 daily and the program is on-going and goes on all year long. “We make our annual donation to Shriners each December so they can purchase needed items for the Cincinnati Burn Unit”, states Jana. “Last year we are happy to announce that our donation was over $2,200.00 to Shriners including some personal monetary donations from some very giving people”, says Jana as she gets so excited about this program. “If you had rather give a monetary donation, that is always accepted as well, and the money will go along with the can tab collections”, says Jana. There is a money donation container on the counter of Hanks Construction Company/East Logan Water District office.

The first year that Jana headed up this program, she was told that Logan County donated more aluminum can tabs than the City of Louisville itself. “Now that’s impressing”, says Jana. Logan County is full of very generous people and it is always such a heart-warming experience to make the donations to Shriners.

If you have can tabs that you want to deliver and you can’t make it Monday through Friday, call Jana Hanks and she will help arrange another time. “We thank all of you who have taken the time to collect the can tabs over the years and appreciate your efforts”, says Jana. It only takes a minute to pop the can tab off and put in a container and save them rather than them being thrown in the garbage. “Something so small ends up being something so big for those in need”, says Jana.

We will gladly accept your can tab donations now and always. Don’t throw them away, save them, keep them coming! Do realize that aluminum can tabs are not just soda cans, they are on pet food cans, canned vegetables, juices and more. They all add up and every donation is much appreciated.

For more information, call Jana Hanks at 725-7091 or better yet, just drop your collections by anytime. “It’s amazing how much WE CAN DO when we all work together to support such a great cause. Everyone CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
