When you start off with honesty, integrity and craftsmanship and mix it all together with a caring demeanor, you have a recipe for success not only personally, but professionally. This is exactly what describes Tommy Vaughn and a business he began close to 50 years ago in the city of Lewisburg.
Businesses are a dime a dozen, just look in the yellow pages and you can find at least a dozen or more for whatever need you need. The ones that stick out; however, are the ones that see more than just dollar signs, but instead see a need to help another, one to be met with the best you can do for someone else.
Mr. Tommy Vaughn saw this in his work, which gave him the reputation he has carried with him to his retirement in 2011. Vaughn business of Heating and Air Conditioning began in 1960 after he had returned home from moving to and working in Michigan in the 1950s.
When Vaughn returned to Lewisburg the housing market began to boom and air conditioning was the newest thing everyone wanted and Vaughn knew how to give it to them.
With Vaughn retiring, a hole was left in an industry that has serviced not only Logan County, but surrounding counties as well. The hole; however, didn’t stay empty for long as Vaughn’s grandson John decided it was time to pick up all the hard work and dedication his grandfather laid down.
“My grandfather cared about the people he worked for. You could tell it by his workmanship and the quality of the product and he was a man of his word as well,” said the young Vaughn. “I will continue to stand by what my grandfather stood for and I will keep that going,” added Vaughn.
John is no stranger to this business, being the third generation in the heating and cooling trade. He grew up around the business and paid close attention to every detail. “I always looked up to my grandfather, he always did things perfect and took pride in what he did. He really cared for the community and the people he did work for,” said John Vaughn, adding that people still talk about his grandfather and his integrity.
John went and studied the craft and took all the tests to become certified. He of course had a leg up having grown up around the business to begin with, but he needed to make it official to be able to take over where his grandfather left off.
“I want people to know that we will be here for them when they need us. I realize there are a lot of other heating and cooling businesses out there and I am definitely not putting them down in any way. I just want the people of Logan County and surrounding communities to know that I will do the best I can to help them with what they need and I will be here anytime of the day or night if required,” said Vaughn.
Vaughn said it wasn’t uncommon for his grandfather to get called out on holidays, but he answered the call because he knew someone needed him. He said he will give that 110 percent as well.
Vaughn said if he adopted a motto he guessed it would be “We sell great products, but also perfect service.”
Working along side of Vaughn are three very seasoned service team members with numerous years of knowledge working for his grandfather. They include Rodney Vaughn, who has 45 years experience, Janson Hall, and Steve Forgy, who worked many years for Tommy Vaughn. Also working for the business is John’s wife Jacqueline who provides the bookkeeping and secretarial duties.
When Tommy ran the business he did so along side his wife Sarabelle who also handled the inside operations. “It’s a family built business that will stay family,” said John, wanting to show his children the importance of honesty and integrity just as his grandfather did for him. “I hope to one day be able to pass this business on to one of my children,” John added.
When asking Tommy Vaughn why he thought his business Vaughn Heating and Air Conditioning turned out so successful over all these years his answer was simple, “I loved what I did,” he said.
