On Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, Billy Stokes, 40, of Elkton was traveling west on Hopkinsville Road in a 1996 Ford Contour four-door when he lost control of his car, skidded off of the roadway and overturned near Miles Road. Upon arrival of emergency units, Stokes was entrapped in the vehicle and had to be removed using mechanical means.

Stokes suffered multiple injuries and was flown by AirEvac helicopter to Vanderbilt Hospital for treatment. Stokes was not wearing a seatbelt and speeding has been determined to be one factor in the accident.

The accident is being investigated by Deputy Jonathan Shackelford. Assisting on the scene were Russellville Rural Fire Department, Deputy L. Hadden, Medical Center EMS and AirEvac/Lifeflight.
