The Western Kentucky University men's and women's track and field teams hosted the third annual National City Invitational Friday and Saturday at Charles M. Ruter track. The teams combined to win thirteen events on their home turf.
Warren East graduate Brian Gifford won the men's high jump competition, clearing 6'8.75", while also placing second in the javelin with a personal-best toss of 165'8".
Brian is the son of former Green Ridge pastor Jim Gifford and the late Beth Gifford, who fought gallantly against cancer while teaching at Chandlers.
Former Logan County High School star runner Justin Groves is a distance runner for the Toppers and competed in the 5,000 meters Saturday and finished 8th with a time of 15:53.18.
This probably was the final meet at that track. Feix Field at L.T. Smith Stadium is to be renovated, and WKU is looking for a site for a new track.
