Saying that the Logan County Lady Cougars of 2016 is a young team is an understatement. Six of the nine starting players are not even in high school yet. Out of the remaining three starters, two are freshman. Brandy Trimble has led this group of young ladies much farther than anyone would have expected. On May 24th, the Lady Cougars won their first district championship since 2009. On Monday, Logan County took the field for the 4th Region softball tournament at Western Kentucky University.

The Cumberland County Lady Panthers came into the Regional tournament after claiming the title of runners-up in the 16th district. They ended the season with the best record in the 4th Region (26-13.) Drawing the Lady Panthers in round one was challenging for the Lady Cougars (18-14,) but the 13th district champions did not appear to be intimidated.

Seventh grader Abby Hinton was the starting pitcher for Logan County. Hinton and the defense shut down the mighty Lady Panthers in order during the first inning. In fact, Cumberland County did not record an official base hit until the top of the 4th inning. The hit was a double, then an error allowed the first run of the game for the Lady Panthers. They would add two more runs in the top of the 6th.

Logan County got the first hit of the game. Brea Croslin singled in the first inning. Sydney Lee singled in the 2nd. After Kennedy Nichols roped a double into the left field corner with two out in the 4th, Jillian McLellan walked. The Lady Cougars failed to bring home any runs and ended the inning with a fly out.

Cumberland County led 3-0 going into the bottom of the 6th. With two out and a runner on first, Nichols hit another double to left field driving in Kaylin Page. The score was 3-1 after six. The Lady Cougars could not get anything going in the 7th. Logan County’s season ended in the first game of the regional tournament after falling 3-1 to Cumberland County. The Cumberland County Lady Panthers were eliminated the following day by Greenwood.

The hits did not come easy for the Lady Cougars. Only three players recorded base hits. Brea Croslin and Sydney Lee had singles. Kennedy Nichols smashed two doubles while driving in the lone run for Logan.

Abby Hinton went the distance, allowing seven hits, walking three, and striking out two. Hinton only gave up one earned run, the other two came off of errors.

The Lady Cougars had 18 wins during the 2016 season. The ladies assembled quite an impressive season and are only losing one starting senior. Expect Logan County to dominate district 13 and region 4 for many years to come.
