The Russellville Panthers travelled to Morgantown on Friday night and came home with a 52-42 victory over the Butler County Bears.
In an exciting, back-and-forth contest, the Panthers trailed after the first quarter, led at the half, and trailed after three quarters. But there were in the lead at the end of the game, 52-42.
In the victory the Panthers continued their run attack with a total of 339 rushing yards. The Panthers defense stepped up in this game, as well, allowing the Bears only 193 yards rushing and just 88 yards passing.
Joshua Bigbee gained 191 yards on 18 carries and scored one TD, MJ Jones had 96 yards on 12 carries and scored two TDs, and Drew West carried the ball 14 times for 39 yards and two TDs. Quarterback Jaylyn McMurry completed two of four passes for 46 yards and two TDs. McMurry also rushed the ball six times and gained 13 yards. Jones was responsible for 30 of the Panthers’ points as he also scored twice on catches of McMurry’s passes and was successful three times on 2-point conversions.
The defense stepped up on Friday night, holding the Bears’ passing attack to 88 yards and recovering two Bears’ fumbles.
Next up for the Panthers is a visit from local rival Logan County on Friday night at Rhea Stadium. The Cougars and Panthers will kick off the “Clash of the Cats” at 7 p.m.
