The Russellville High School football team scored a huge win against the Trigg County Wildcats in the season-opening game Friday night.
The Panthers played an amazing game that resulted in a 25-14 win over the Wildcats.
The Panthers ended the game with 138 rushing yards, 31 passing yards, and three interceptions. Sophomore fullback Desmon Quarles lead the team in rushing yards with a total of 49.
The game started out with a touchdown by the Wildcats in the first quarter. But the Panthers quickly answered back with a 25-yard touchdown off an interception from Barrett Croslin, which put the score at 7-6 at the end of the first half.
The fourth quarter was when the Panthers stepped up and took control of the game. The Wildcats scored a touchdown in the beginning of the second half, but their lead was quickly crushed with an 87-yard touchdown on the kick off return by senior Zach Hines.
The Panthers defense quickly stopped the Wildcats from scoring and came back with a three yard touchdown pass from Croslin to Quarles. Hines then ended the game with another three yard rush for a touchdown to end the game 24-14.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the team. The boys played their hearts out for all four quarters,” said Head coach John Myers. “They played team football tonight.”
Myers said the defense put the team in position to win the game. The Panthers had put together an outstanding defensive scheme and even scored on their defense. Myers said the boys have matured and have figured out the game more but they’ve still got to work on their offense.
“The boys had to overcome my bad offensive calls in the first half and they got the job done,” said Myers. “They stepped it up tonight.”
The Panthers (1-0) head to Fort Campbell next Friday night to face the Falcons.
