Fuel tanker overturns, closes down 68-80
by Chris Cooper
Managing Editor

An accident involving a semi tractor trailer fuel tanker caused the closer of Hwy. 68-80 just east of Auburn for hours Monday afternoon.

According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Department, it was discovered that the semi, driven by 52-year-old Michael R. Gosser of Adolphus, Ky., ran off the roadway and overturned numerous times.

Gosser was entrapped inside the overturned semi and the fuel tank, which was upside down and loaded with 3,000 gallons of gasoline, was pouring onto the ground.

After approximately one hour, and working in extremely hazardous conditions, Gosser was freed from the vehicle by the Auburn Fire Department using the Jaws of Life.

Gosser was transported to the Medical Center in Bowling Green where he was listed in stable condition.

Approximately 3,000 gallons of gasoline spilled from the tanker and members from the Logan County Emergency Management, Russellville Fire Department, State Fire Marshal and State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) arrived on scene to assist in the clean-up.

Hwy. 68-80 was shut down in all directions for over five hours while the scene was being investigated and clean-up procedures initiated.

The accident is being investigated by Captain David Kitchens of the Logan County Sheriff’s Department.

Responding to the incident were the Auburn Fire Department, the Russellville Fire Department, sheriff Wallace Whittaker, numerous deputies of the sheriff’s department and Ky Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers.
