The Logan County High School soccer teams held their annual “Pink Out” game in honor of Christy Phillips and all others who have been touched by cancer. Several booths and activities were set up to raise money for the American Cancer society to fight for a cure.
The Logan County soccer players stepped on the field with their pink jerseys and socks ready to play.
The Lady Cougars played first against the Glasgow Lady Scotties early in the afternoon. The Lady Cougars kept the ball moving during the whole game making good passes to one another. The Lady Scotties defense was constantly moving along with the Lady Cougars.
Breanna Baptiste scored the first goal by the Lady Cougars in the first 10 minutes of the game. Emma Cartas followed up shortly after with the second and final goal for the Lady Cougars.
The Lady Scotties scored once in the second half but the Lady Cougars defense was strong enough to keep them from scoring another goal.
“Passing in the first half was crisp. The girls were finding feet and making them play a lot of defense,” said head coach Daniel McCarley. “We played good offense tonight. They worked the middle tonight instead of just the outsides.”
The Lady Cougars won 2-1 against the Lady Scotties but coach McCarley says that’s not what mattered tonight.
“Tonight it wasn’t about who won or lost, it is about honoring the victims and playing for them,” said McCarley. “We wear pink for our loved ones who have died and who are still fighting. To show support and honor their memories.”
The win improved Logan County to 3-1 on the season. The Lady Cougars were coming off a 2-1 win at Franklin-Simpson on Monday for their first-ever District 13 victory. They next play on Sept. 4 against Todd County Central at home.
The Cougars took the field that evening against the Franklin-Simpson Wildcats. Early in the first half, D.J. Lee scored the first goal against the Wildcats which put the Cougars off to a good start. But shortly after, the Wildcats followed up and scored a goal. The two teams battled throughout the half and it was Diego Garcia who made the second point for the Cougars at the end of the first half.
When the Cougars walked on to the field during the second half, they were soon discouraged by a goal by the Wildcats to tie the game. After that, the Cougars fell apart and the Wildcats scored two more points to end the game 4-2.
“We had a good first half and a bad second half. They have got to start playing two halves,” said LCHS coach Eric Evans. “They got their heads down and stopped passing in the second half.”
Even though the Cougars didn’t end the game like they wanted, they knew they were playing for something much important than a win.
“We want to show the community that we don’t only care about soccer, we care about them,” said Evans. “So many people have been touched and lost by cancer, I’m glad this is all going to a good cause.”
The Cougars will play tonight at a home game against Butler County.
