Thursday morning employees of the Russellville Parks Department, and a few others, were seen running around the Carrico Square chasing a mama duck and her 11 babies. No, these weren’t part of the popular television show Duck Dynasty, but they were popular enough as passersby slowed to keep from hitting the duck and her ducklings as they ran out into the street every once in awhile to avoid capture.
Mayor Mark Stratton ordered the duck rescue because he was afraid they would get into the square’s fountain, which is treated with chemicals. He believes the mama duck flew into the square and had her babies, then looked for the closest water source to swim.
“I didn’t want to see the little fellows get hurt, so we thought it best to capture them and relocate them to a safer environment,” said Stratton. However, capturing them turned out to be a little harder than anticipated and kept those trying to help running around for a few hours.
Finally, with the help of the Logan County Humane Society’s trap, the mama duck and her ducklings were taken into custody and relocated to a farm where they will be allowed to grow a little and then be transported to a lake.
