Finley Woodard has been named the first female head coach of the Logan County High School girls’ basketball team, replacing Scot MacAllister, who stepped down from that post recently.

Woodard, who works at Western Kentucky University as associate director of admissions, will work as a paraprofessional, which means she is not a teacher at the school she coaches.

She joins boys’ basketball coach Lonnie Mason, who also serves as a paraprofessional.

Principal Casey Jaynes said 15 people applied for the job and four were interviewed before the position was offered to Woodard.

“We did check and make sure there would be no problems with NCAA rules with her working in admissions at WKU — and there aren’t,” Jaynes said.

Woodard said she was looking forward to getting started as coach and was thrilled when she was offered the job.

“I have a passion for coaching basketball,” Woodard said. “I have been an assistant for about 13 years, and when this came open, I really wanted to take this opportunity to be a head coach.”

Woodard spent two different stints as an assistant coach at LCHS. Most recently she was an assistant at Greenwood High School.

“I like playing an uptempo style,” Woodard said. “When I played, I always liked to get up and down the court. We’ll also be playing very good defense, because I think that is definitely a key to winning.”

Logan County went 9-19 this past season under MacAllister. The Lady Cougars’ most successful season in recent years came in 2010, when they went 18-12 and advanced to the semifinals of the 4th Region Tournament.

Woodard said she is confident she can lead the team to even greater success in the future.

“I think there is a great group of girls here,” Woodard said. “We’ll get there by working hard and having a great work ethic.”
