Back to school event brings colossal crowd

The Logan County Youth Action Team sponsored “School Ready Fest” proved to be a success Saturday, as organizers were surprised to see people lining up down the 68-80 Bypass half an hour before the event began.

The first Logan County/Russellville “School Ready Fest” was a unified community event held to help all families in Logan County and Russellville better prepare for the coming school year.

Several local agencies and organizations were on-hand to help prepare children for the 2012-13 school year, including providing free school and sports physicals, free haircuts, free school supplies and a variety of other services, including informational booths and also service organizations such as law enforcement, fire departments and even a emergency helicopter.

The supplies went fast, said organizers, who expected a crowd, but could never imagined the one that showed up.

“This will just better prepare us for next year,” said one of the organizers, who added they hoped to get a corporate sponsor next year to be able to have enough school supplies to go around.

In the past, each school in each district held a Back to School Bash to help their students get ready for the school year to begin. These Bash’s took a great deal of organization and time, but they were well worth it for parents and their children. A time mixed with fun and also help with those lengthy supply lists.

Because it seemed like the schools were reinventing the wheel by hosting their own events, The Logan County Youth Action Team felt it may be a good idea to combine those efforts and to throw a unified one-stop, all schools event instead. Putting those several ideas and efforts together for a big School Ready Fest.

The event was held at the Logan County Extension Office and provided the necessary room for parking and activities.
