Two employees at the Logan County Detention Center were recognized for their bravery at Tuesday’s Fiscal Court meeting for helping to save the life of an inmate on Nov. 1, 2012.
Capt. Dewayne Gates and Deputy Josh Eaton were both given a commendation at the meeting by jailer Bill Jenkins.
According to Jenkins, an inmate hung himself with a bed sheet from the top of a bunk. When other inmates saw this, they began making noise to get the attention from the guards. Both Gates and Eaton rushed inside the dormitory, which held numerous other inmates, without regard to their own safety.
Upon locating the hanging inmate, Deputy Eaton lifted him up, causing slack in the bed sheet. Jenkins said the inmate was nearly dead. Capt. Gates then loosened the noose around the inmate’s neck and brought him to the floor, preparing to administer CPR. Because the noose was loosened so quickly, it allowed blood flow to begin circulating, said Jenkins, and the inmate began breathing on his own.
Jenkins said they were very lucky, because the inmate was purple and only has a faint heartbeat.
