The Russellville High School drama club just wrapped up its annual spring musical, which was a great success.

The club presented “The Wizard of Oz” the past two weekends after working on the play since March.

“There were over 70 students from Russellville High School and Stevenson Elementary that were involved in the production,” said director and RHS music teacher Brian Brown. “Most all the work was all done by the students themselves. Pretty much everything you saw on stage was run by the students.”

There were four shows in all and each was well attended.

“We are very thankful that the community showed up they way they did,” Brown said.

This was about the sixth year the drama club has put together a spring musical. Last year the club performed “Annie” and two years ago they did a production of “Beauty and the Beast.”

“We had a blast with this one,” Brown said. “It seems like it gets a little bit easier each year. We know how we work together.”

Some of the older students in this year’s production have been a part of several plays in past years.

“Some of the students have done four of five of them already, so they really knew what they were doing,” Brown said.

This was the first year that students from Stevenson have been involved.

Elementary students got to try out for roles as Munchkins.

“Elaine Blythe from the elementary school was our ‘Munchin coordinator’ for the show,” Brown said. “We started bringing them in just before spring break and had several ‘Munchkin days’ when we worked on their parts of the production.”

Brown said there are plans for another musical next year - but he has no idea what it might be.

“I’ve had kids already asking what it’s going to be,” he said. “I’ve been telling them that I have no idea. I’ve got a marching band show to come up with before that.”
