Cody Hunt, a senior at Logan County High school, is riding high lately after winning a 2012 half ton Silverado pickup truck. The 17-year-old won the truck, two saddles worth $3,000 each, two buckles and $4,500 in cash by doing something he really enjoys, roping cattle.

Cody and his dad traveled down past Knoxville, Tenn., to the Hillbilly Redneck Truck Explosion held in Morristown, Tenn., the weekend of Sept. 8. This was a Team Roping event. Team Roping, as described by Cody, is when you have two riders and one calf. One rider ropes the head, while the other ropes the back feet. The participants are given points during the event.

The first day they were there, Cody entered a roping and won 1st place. The prizes were cash and a trophy saddle. Then they entered the tuck roping, where JX2 Productions gave away five trucks. Cody won 1st and 7th place in this roping allowing him to win the pickup, another trophy saddle, two trophy buckles and more cash.

“I was so nervous waiting to hear if I’d won. My dad was about to throw up he was so nervous,” said Cody, who has only been roping for two years. Cody said his father ropes and he has grown up around it, but it was a friend of the family, Marshall Hall, who Cody says taught him what he knows.

“I really love it,” said the high schooler, who plans on continuing the sport and is hoping he can earn a college scholarship from it.

Cody says he is attending an event held at Murray this weekend where college roping coaches will be present. He says he is hoping to impress some of them with his skills.

Cody is the son of Tim and Angie Hunt. A special thanks to his sponsors Total Equine and LubriSyn.
