The Russellville Middle School boys’ basketball team recently finished up its 2012-13 season as runners-up in the Best of the Best Regional Tournament, which was held in Hopkinsville.

The Panthers finished the regular season with an outstanding 19-2 record and went undefeated against Logan County competition, beating those teams by an average of 38 points per game.

The two losses in the regular season came against Bowling Green and South Warren.

“We had close losses in both of those,” RMS coach Pete Ries said. “They were both early in the season and we were playing much better later in the year.”

In the region tournament, Russellville lost by four to Lone Oak in the first game of pool play, then beat Paducah Tilghman by one and beat Graves County by nine. The Panthers then lost to host Hopkinsville 51-50 in the championship game.

The entire squad was made up by eighth graders.

“That bodes well for the future of the high school team,” Ries said. “They’ve been together since they were in fourth grade and have always played against older and better players.”

The team was led by Em’Jay Jones, the squad’s top scorer and rebounder, point guard Micah Naylor, two-guard Jalen McMurray and top outside shooter Pedro Bradshaw.

Other players for the team included, TK Hampton, Paul Jones, Deandre Riveria, Johnny Drumgole, Deshawn Mason, Drew West and Deante Dowlen.
