The Panthers start their season slow with a record of 1-2. The Panthers lost their season opener to the Muhlenberg County Mustangs and lost against the Hopkinsville Tigers on Thursday. But the Panthers showed their talent at the first home game of the season and beat Butler County 97-50 on Saturday.
The Panthers played a tough game against the Tigers on Thursday after falling 61-78. The Panthers fell behind early in the game leaving them 21-44 at the half. The Panthers had fallen too far to come back in the second half but they finished the game hard and never gave up to fall 18 points away from the Tigers.
Senior Jordan Kennedy lead the Panthers with 15 points. Christian Naylor followed close behind with 12 and with Darrion Quarles and Josh Hampton close behind with 11 each.
“We have to work on our defense and trapping the other team,” said head coach Phil Todd. “But I’m very proud of the guys they didn’t give up.”
In Saturday’s night’s win, the Panthers had four players score in double figures. They were once again led by Kennedy, who scored 22 on 12-of-13 shooting. He also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Zach Hines hit nine of the 10 shots he took and score 19. Barret Croslin was 8-for-11 from the floor for 17 points. josh Hampton also added 16 points.
As a team, Russellville shot 76 percent, going 38-of-50 and made three of 10 3-pointers.
“It’s always good to get that first win,” coach Todd said. “Even when we lose, I hope it’s a learning experience.”
The Lady Panthers haven’t had much luck going into the season with a 0-2 record. The Lady Panthers fell 49-53 after an overtime game to Butler County and a 49-63 loss to McLean County on Friday.
Both Russellville teams with be playing a double header at home on Friday against the Todd County Central Rebels.
