A group of 4th graders at Olmstead School met face-to-face with University of Kentucky student Julie McGhee on December 17. Meeting with a college student may not seem like a life altering event but Julie is somewhat of a rock star to these students.
Last school year the same group of 4th graders began a book study of The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. The story is set in Paris, France and Julie spent August 2011 through August 2012 in Paris studying the art of culinary pastry design. The student’s book study began with research on Paris followed by a Skype session with Julie seated in her Paris apartment with the city aglow behind her. Julie compared the city’s history and culture to America’s and answered student questions.
Julie returned to Lexington in August to continue her civil engineering studies but took time during her Christmas break to meet the students in person. The visit made the global learning experience authentic and meaningful for the kids and Julie!
