Thomas Vernon DuVal, 88, died Monday, October 8, 2012, at Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, N.C.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 11 at First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, N.C. The family will receive friends in the Brown room following the service. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 13 at Sulphur Springs Church Cemetery in Simpson County.
Mr. DuVal was born on April 12, 1924 in Richmond, VA to the late Thomas Jackson and Eva Lillian Sours DuVal. He was a graduate of John Marshall High School, attended Hampden Sydney College, and entered the US Navy in 1941. He served in Ireland, England and France as a radio technician. He graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Later he obtained his Professional Engineers license for NC. He worked as a civilian with the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Belvoir, VA.
He married Martha June Hatter April 1, 1951 and in 1953 moved to Winston-Salem to work for Western Electric, then AT&T and retired from Lucent Technologies.
Tom was a member of the First Baptist Church and served as co-chief usher for years. He was also a volunteer for William Day Care facility, Meals on Wheels and PMBA. After retirement he discovered music and became very proficient in playing mountain and hammered dulcimer by ear.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years; two children, Sarah DuVal (husband Wayne Whitman) and John DuVal (wife Denise Hickox); two grandchildren, Hulen DuVal (wife Sue) and Cyonn Alexander; sister, Margaret Lewis; brother-in-law, Louis LeGrand, nieces; nephews; and step- great grandchildren.
