The committee is working on developing a new district facilities plan. Associate superintendent and committee chairperson Mike Hurt explained that every four years the district must redo its facilities plans. In doing so, they look at the district’s facilities and decide what upgrades and improvements need to be made.
Hurt said one item the committee discussed was improving the safety of the entrances to the schools.
“Some schools don’t have a way of controlling people coming into the building,” Hurt said.
The committee also discussed creating a new Area Technology Center on the campus of LCHS. The Russellville Area Technology Center currently serves both the Russellville and Logan County school districts and there has been talk in the past of creating one for Logan County.
The most recent district facilities plan had called for a new K-8 school to relieve overcrowding at Auburn and Olmstead. This project has been put on hold because of budget cuts, but the committee discussed keeping it on the plan.
Other items discussed included improving the heating and cooling systems at all schools, a new auditorium at LCHS, canopies for Adairville, Auburn and Lewisburg, expanding the cafeteria at LCHS, and purchasing adjoining school properties when possible.
Architects from Sherman Carter Barnhart, PSC discussed the viability of the items presented and agreed to provide cost estimates for the proposed projects to complete the DFP draft.
The planning committee is made up of parents, administrators and teachers. Those on the committee and their role are: Elisa Brown, Administrator; John Dawson, Logan County Board Member; Jennifer Ferguson, Adairville Teacher; Karon Hayes, Auburn teacher, Gerald Hildabrand, County Planning and Zoning; Natashia Hughes, LCHS Parent; Mike Hurt, Central Office; Casey Jaynes, LCHS Principal; Alex Keltner, Community Member; Marshall Kemp, Superintendent; Ben Kemplin, Principal Olmstead; Cher Rosser, Teacher Lewisburg; Paul Sansom, Principal Adairville; Shannon Schweers, Parent Lewisburg; Ann Scott, Parent Auburn; Joe Simmons, Community Member; Mac Taylor, School Facilities Supervisor; Grayson Wells, Community Member; Marty White, Teacher Chandlers; Jimmy Kent Wilson, Parent Olmstead.
Hurt said he was pleased with the make up of the committee and thinks they will do a good job.
They have the good of the schools, the good of the county and the good of the community at heart, Hurt said.
The committee will meet again on Jan. 19, 2010.
