The Logan County Lady Cougars made history Tuesday night after winning the district soccer championship against the Todd County Central Lady Rebels in just their second season as a varsity program.
The Lady Cougars played Franklin-Simpson on Monday and won 3-0. Tuesday the Lady Cougars played a tough game against the Lady Rebels and won 2-3 in penalty kicks.
The Lady Cougars faced the Lady Wildcats on Monday with a easy win. Emma Cartas made the first goal early in the first half and was assisted by Brittany Barton. Senior Claire Hopkins would score the next goal with a penalty kick. Hopkins would score in the second half to bring the Lady Cougars to a solid win 3-0.
“The girls did a good job of not getting frustrated and staying calm and passing the ball. Nothing got in the way of their game,” said head coach Daniel McCarley on Monday. “We’ve faced Todd twice this year and both ended up in a tie and we lost one game in penalty kicks. We know their strengths and we’re ready to win.”
On Tuesday the Lady Cougars would face the Lady Rebels. The Cougars had not been able to win against Todd County all season but that would change.
Emma Cartas would score early in the first half of the game to take the lead against the Lady Rebels. But the Lady Cougars would get a yellow card and the Lady Rebels scored on a penalty kick bring the game to a tie. The Lady Cougars fought hard and played smart during the rest of the game but couldn’t score against the Lady Rebels defense which would take the game into overtime. The extra time would still end in a tie of 1-1 which resulted in penalty kicks.
The two seniors, Claire Hopkins and Kelsey Markham, would both score their penalty kicks. Goalkeeper Lauren Burnett would only let the Lady Rebels score once which would lead the Lady Cougars to their first district championship win.
“I’m ecstatic. We controlled most of the game and our passing. They never gave up and fought hard,” said McCarley. “They controlled their passing and stayed calm and passed to feet. We knew defensively who we had to shut down tonight and they were successful. This is only our second year of varsity and we’re really happy to win our first district championship at home for our fans. We’re thankful for the hard work by the parents and the leadership at the school. We’ve got a bright future ahead.”
The Lady Cougars will host their regional game next week on Monday.
