On a incredibly humid night in Bowling Green, the Lady Cougars took to WKU’s softball field to take on one of the premiere power house program in the Bowling Green Lady Purples. The Lady Purples managed to wrestle control of District 14 from Greenwood this season and were matching up with the Lady Cougars, as Logan County was the runner up in District 13.
The Lady Cougars had gotten hot at just the right time as they showed what could happen with the talent they had up and down their line up as well as their pitching staff and defense. They showed that in games against Hart County, and in the impressive victory over Todd County Central. They would look to keep that momentum going and pull the stunning upset over heavily favored Bowling Green.
Despite playing valiantly for seven innings, the Lady Cougars would succumb to Bowling Green in a 10-1 loss.
“Like I said Saturday it doesn’t matter who we draw if we don’t play well it doesn’t matter If we play well we had a chance to beat anybody,” LCHS head coach Michael Crawford said. “We don’t make mistakes like we did it’s a different ball game.”
In the top of the first, what could go wrong somehow found a way to go wrong. Routine outs became not so routine as the Lady Purples jumped on the Lady Cougars incredibly quick. The stout defense they had shown in the past month, fell apart for seven errors in the game, most of them in the first few innings.
“We made some silly mistakes with the ball we hadn’t made in a long time,” coach Crawford said. “I don’t know if it was a week lay off hurt them a bit, but we were practicing just about everyday. That seven looks bad in the third column and it was the difference in the ball game, it really was.”
The offense of the Lady Cougars took some time to adjust to the power pitching that the Lady Purples exhibited.
“That pitcher, she threw a monster game,” coach Crawford said.
After that first inning though, the Lady Cougars got adjusted to the bright lights and began to put up a fight against the mighty Lady Purples.
They managed to figure out the power pitcher who had kept the Lady Cougars off the base paths in the fourth as they managed to scratch across their first run. They would pay a huge cost as senior Alicia Croft took a foul ball off the wrist and had to be taken out of the game.
In the subsequent innings the Lady Cougars slammed the door on the incredibly potent Bowling Green offense, and would mount rallies in their turn of the inning but it wouldn’t be enough. The Bowling Green Lady Purples ended the Lady Cougars’ magical run with the 10-1 loss.
The Lady Cougars will now go into the off season knowing what can happen when that combination of pitching, defense, and offense come together. The defense, and offense will take a hit with their three senior leaders in Cheyenne Bilicki, Alicia Croft, and Lindsey Ezell graduating.
But with a potent core returning the Lady Cougars seem poised to take that next step and capture a district title when the signs of spring return next season.
