The Logan County Adult Education staff has launched its new civics class. These classes are designed to assist students that are interested in becoming U. S. citizens. After receiving a $15,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education Sharyl Markham, ELL (formerly known as ESL) instructor has been ordering class materials, hired an assistant and has begun scheduling classes. “Classes are offered at the Professional Learning Center on 121 South Spring Street, on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:45-6:45 p.m. Ann Palmer is on site to assist in our Family Literacy Program, so children of program participants are welcome. We are also offering two new classes on site; Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m.-12 p.m. These classes are both civic and Spanish GED classes. If interested parties have more than five in their group, our staff can set up classes off site; a home or church for example. I travel quite a bit in Logan County to meet the demand for these classes”, says Markham. All classes are free to the public.

Hopefully, this civics grant is the first step toward becoming a central location for citizenship resources. There have been many changes and more immigrants may be eligible for citizenships.
