The Adairville city council held a special called meeting on Friday to open bids for the construction of an addition to the city fire hall and to discuss buying a new work truck for the city water employees.

There were two bids for the fire hall addition, which is needed in order to hold the new tanker truck recently purchased by the Adairville Rural Fire Department.

Herman England Jr. gave the city a bid of $26,360 and Carter Douglas Company bid $38,750 for the job.

The council took their time looking over the two bids.

“It seems like everything is pretty comparable,” councilman Brent Johnson said after going over the bids.

Adairville mayor Donna Blake noted that England’s bid was more itemized with regard to materials than the bid from Carter Douglas.

“And that seems to be where most of the difference in them is,” Blake said.

Council member Becky Tinch said that the addition was needed and that with the winter weather soon to be over, construction should be started as soon as possible.

After some discussion, council member Michele Trimble made the motion to accept the bid from England.

“I’d like to see us go with Mr. England, because that bid is so much cheaper,” Trimble said.

The council voted unanimously to award the bid to England.

“Carter Douglas did the addition to our church and it’s awesome,” Johnson said. “They do good work, but $12,000 is a lot of money.”

Also at the meeting, the council voted to buy a new 2013 Chevy work truck from Herb Jones Chevrolet in Elizabethtown for $17,056.

Blake said she had ridden around in one of the city’s current work trucks and it was in need of replacement.

“I think we need a truck,” Blake said.

After talking to a dealership in Nashville and not being able to get a better price than the Elizabethtown deal, the council voted unanimously to pay the $17,056 for the new truck.
