Logan County News

Hello again to each of you. I appreciate your reading my column and sharing a little fun and some news for a few minutes. It may bring back some memories or even give you some new news. At any rate here we go.

I have discovered a very good restaurant with good food and reasonable prices just across the railroad tracks from my home on Cornelius Street in Russellville. The address is 471 W. 2nd St. It is the Firehouse Restaurant across from Southern States and the Russellville branch of the Adairville Feed Mill. Diane Quane bought the restaurant some 22 years ago and has run it since. She opens at 6 a.m. and closes about 2 p.m.

Diane specializes in plate lunches that are fantastic! The food is ole time cooking at its’ best. Slow cooked meats, lots of great vegetables with flavor and seasoning and the best fried corn bread in town. (Its thick, soft and flavorful.) Her desserts are also very good. You can call in at 270-726-9066 and drive up to a pickup window for carry outs.

Diane has a 16 year old daughter named Alexis and a 22 year old son named Morgan. Both are planning for college so Diane is going to have to serve a lot of meals to help pay that bill. Come and bring friends and enjoy a new place with very good food at a very good price.

People In The News – I went to Louisville two weekends ago for the Kentucky Democratic Party State Convention. It was held at the state fairgrounds and had an all time record attendance. The speakers were fantastic, the enthusiasm at a high pitch and there was good will all around. People seemed to feel good about the upcoming elections.

I discovered at the convention that Logan County has a real star in our State Representative Martha Jane King. Wow! I had no idea she was so popular. She stayed most of the time with our Logan County delegation and our congressional district, yet, they wanted her in each of the other congressional districts. Throughout the convention I heard young people get up repeatedly and bring praises for Martha Jane as a benefactor that got them involved and challenged them to do their best. I also watched our state and federal officials search her out for confabs. And the best of all is she is Logan County’s star.

I found out that she has been appointed to the very important joint House and Senate Committee on Veteran Military Affairs that is working hard on ways to cut suicides among veterans. She is also working hard on a proposal to build a Veteran’s Nursing Home in Bowling Green and a site for Homeless Female Veterans. Three cheers for Martha Jane King and all she is doing for her constituents!!!

50 Years Ago – War protests swept the nation. Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) was the World Heavyweight Champion of the World. There had never been another like him. He had a great personality and great energy. He refused to fight in Vietnam and was stripped of his title. (I went and signed up for the draft.) I liked Muhammad but found it hard at first to get use to his name. At the same time he was World Champion he could not sit down and eat a meal in most restaurants all over Kentucky and the south due to segregation. Hundreds of thousands of people were demonstrating all over America and the world against the war. At the same time many of the same people were demonstrating against the evils of segregation in our nation. Popular British actor Michael Caine completed the filming of “Gambit” at Universal Studios in Hollywood. The 2” micro TV was introduced to the public. (It was very popular for a few years.) NASA’s Project Gemini had ten successful launches into space. The Russians landed a vehicle on the Moon. A handful of Neo Nazis were demonstrating around America against Jews and blaming them for all the problems of the world.

The big event of the 4th of July in Logan County is the countywide celebration at the charity Red River Fish & Game Habitat in Adairville. The doors open at 4 p.m. There is no admission to the property. There will be a big BBQ Dinner Fund Raiser $10 per adult and $5 for kids over 12. There will be live entertainment, prizes, a raffle and best of all THE LARGEST FIREWORKS DISPLAY in southwestern Kentucky. Everyone is welcome! Please plan on coming and bringing the whole family. (Last year people said the fireworks display was the largest they had ever seen in Logan County and this year it will be even larger.)

Did You Know? Men can read smaller print than women; women can hear better. Coca Cola was originally green. It is impossible to lick your elbow. (The only exception to this maybe Sheriff Wallace Whitaker.) The state with the highest percent of people who walk to work: Alaska! The percent of Africa that is wilderness is 28%. The percent of North America that is wilderness is 38%. The cost of raising a medium size dog to the age of 11 is $16,400. The average number of airborne over the U.S. at any given hour is 61,000. Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in their hair. The first novel ever written on a typewriter, Tom Sawyer.

Glad my good friends Ralph and Peggy Brewer are back from their home in Florida. They are such wonderful people. It is hard to believe they are 92 years old and so active. Then Adairville has a way of providing a number of 80s and 90s folks. And their minds are good! Wow! I love every one of them.

Till next time. Good night Mrs. Calabash where ever you are!
