Hello Logan County! I am very happy to be with you again this Friday. Needless to say I will be very happy when spring has sprung. Thank goodness I finally bought a 4 wheel drive vehicle last summer. I did not want to get trapped at home again like I did last winter.
Seems like I go to bed and all is well. I wake up in the morning and the ground is covered in ice and snow. It rains a little, melts a little and the next morning more snow. If this keeps up there may be snow until April.
We had such a good snow a few days ago that I decided to make homemade snow cream. Friends brought their kids over and we ate and ate the snow cream. Since then the kids have wanted snow cream every day regardless if there is no snow.
One of the prettiest sights in Russellville is to look out one of the upstairs windows, of my Russellville home, on Cornelius Avenue and look southward past Southern States, Five Star, the hardware store, the Bethel Shopping Center and beyond when it has snowed. It is beautiful!
The second week of December I came down with pneumonia for the second time in my life. Only two weeks before I had the shot for 13 types of pneumonia. At any rate I have not been well since. It seems that I have developed some serious lung problems. Breathing has been labored and after many tests it has been determined that there is a fluid buildup on both lungs, scar tissue, something floating around in my left lung and other problems. I entered the hospital yesterday for surgery. Hopefully, I will be well on the way to full recovery by today.
I never heard my mother curse in her life until one day when she was 75 years old. Out of nowhere came, “Old age is hell!” I now know what she meant. I was extremely healthy all of my life and now I am falling apart.
Hazel Fleming, “the Mayor of Spa” and my part time girlfriend is almost 90. Hazel has written for this newspaper since the 1940s. Can you imagine that! She has been hospitalized recently with breathing and other problems. If you can, send Hazel a card. Her address appears at the end of her weekly news column.
It is time to start thinking about the annual Logan County Fair out at the county extension service this coming summer. The news is that the county fair board has signed a contract with a brand new ride company. There will be some 15 rides for the kids. Even better will be the price. Arm bands for a full evening of ridding will only be $10. That is a fantastic price! Entrance to the fair is free. Booth spaces will be for rent to churches, civic groups, businesses and clubs. Call the Logan County Extension Service for more information.
For Your Health – This is from the Mayo Clinic and on the topic of Drinking Water. A cardiologist determined that heart attacks can be triggered by ‘dehydration.’ Now I carry a bottle of water where ever I go. Aspirin is also a good idea.
Good thing to know! From the Mayo Clinic. How many folks do you know who say they don’t want to drink anything before going to bed because they have to get up at night!
Heart Attack and Water! Drink one glass of water before going to bed to avoid a stroke or heart attack! I never knew this.
Something else I did not know…I asked my doctor why people need to ‘urinate’ so much at night time.
Answer from my cardiac Doctor: Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright (legs swell.) when you lie down and the lower body (legs etc.) seeks level with your kidneys, it is then that the kidneys remove the water because it is easier. I knew you needed your minimum water to help flush the toxins out of your body, but this was news to me.
Correct time to drink water – very important – From a Cardiac Specialist!
Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its effectiveness on the body: —2 glasses of water after waking – helps activate internal organs. –1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal—helps with digestion. –1 glass of water before taking a bath – helps lower blood pressure. –1 glass of water before going to bed- avoids stroke or heart attack.
You can also add to this –My Physician told me that water at bed time will also help prevent night time leg cramps. Your leg muscles are seeking hydration when they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse.
Time to go. Good night good Sheriff and Mrs. Calabash, where ever you are.
