Logan County school administrators are hoping that the state legislature will soon come up with a plan to help excuse a portion of the 16 snow days the district has missed this winter.

There are multiple bills in both the State House and State Senate which could help school districts across the state as they plan the end of the current school year. One bill (HB 410) allows school districts to waive up to 10 snow days - despite how many has been missed due to bad weather. Another (HB 211) will also allow districts to waive days, but only if they have missed over 10 days so far.

“We’re hoping for some relief,” said Logan County schools superintendent Marshall Kemp. “What that will be depends on what happens in Frankfort - and just like the weather, I don’t control any of that.”

The Logan County school board met this week and discussed how, if the district is not allowed to waive any days, the last day of students will be on June 6.

“Our board members are concerned about having our students in school for every month this year,” Kemp said.

The 2014-15 school year begins for Logan County at the end of July.

Kemp said that he would like to be able to excuse five of the 16 days his district has missed.

“That would allow us to get out at the end of May and not be going to school up into June,” he said.

The Russellville Independent school district has only missed nine days this winter and would not be eligible for any forgiveness under HB 211. Some days could possibly be waived if HB 410 is passed and signed by the governor, but even if that is the bill the legislature passes, Russellville likely won’t seek any waivers.

“We’re proceeding under the assumption that we’re not going to qualify for any,” superintendent Leon Smith said.

The Russellville school board meets next week and Smith said he and his fellow administrators have come up with a proposed schedule that will allow the last day for students to be on May 22.
