The county’s E-Scrap event held Oct. 26th proved to be a success once again, said solid waste coordinator Dwight Cockrill. This event, which has been held several times, allows citizens to bring their old/broken electronics to be recycled. The only cost was $5 per television set, all other electronics were disposed of free of charge. Cockrill said two trucks trailers were loaded with E-Scrap and there were 50 television sets brought in.

Magistrate Russell Poore asked during Tuesday’s fiscal court meeting, if this event could be held more throughout the year.

“It is better to collect the scrap at these events then find it on the side of the road later,” said Poore.

Judge Executive Logan Chick noted the county has tried to schedule this event at least twice a year. In the past, the company that comes in and collects the scrap, has charged more for the collection of television sets the second time around. Chick did agree the event is very popular with the citizens and also feels offering it more than once a year is beneficial.

The events are held behind the historic courthouse and items collected include old office equipment such as printers, copiers, fax machines and computers, as well as household items like televisions, vacuum cleaners, electric skillets, irons, etc.

They do not accept large appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, dryers or microwaves. These items can be taken to Cumberland Scrap on Morgantown Road and the owner can get paid for recycling them.

Cockrill said these events are very important to the environment, because if people have a place to take items such as these, they will not end up on the side of the road or in a sink hole somewhere.

“These recycling events help keep our community clean from illegal dumping, which is a win, win for all of us,” said Cockrill.
