United Way of Southern Kentucky (UWSK) will hold a region wide food drive aptly titled “Feed the Need” in Allen, Barren, Logan, Simpson, and Warren counties starting February 24th and ending March 21st.

“Feed the Need” was created in 2009 in response to the increased need in our communities for basic resources as a result of the economic downturn. After speaking with the local food pantries that have benefited from the drive each year, it is abundantly clear that the need for this drive continues this year. United Way’s unique ability to convene a variety of community partners across Southern Kentucky to tackle issues affecting individuals and families makes United Way the ideal backbone organization to lead such an effort as “Feed the Need.”

Since its inception, United Way’s “Feed the Need” Food Drive has collected almost 250,000 non-perishable items for local food banks in Southern Kentucky. Companies, organizations, and groups in Allen, Barren, Logan, Simpson and Warren Counties can participate once again by holding internal food drives starting February 24th through March 21st.

All donations will benefit food banks in the county in which the donations were collected. The benefiting food banks include Barren River Area Safe Space, Community Action of Southern Kentucky, Community Relief Fund, Good Samaritan of Logan and Simpson Counties, and The Salvation Army.

Steve Wallace, President and CEO of United Way of Southern Kentucky, says, “As the single largest volunteer-driven food drive in Southern Kentucky, the annual ‘Feed the Need’ program has become a vital resource to thousands of people who no longer have enough to eat each day. We are excited to have the opportunity to lead this effort to bring together all of our community partners to meet this community need.”

If you are interested in helping to “Feed the Need” by volunteering to run an internal food drive within your company, group, organization, school, or church, contact the United Way office at 270-843-3205 or log onto the United Way of Southern Kentucky website at www.liveunitedtoday.com.
