Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, where with shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under the foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Matthew 5:14-15 KJV
I want to look this week at two things that saved people are told to be in this world. First I want to look at salt. Salt is a very valuable and needed commodity. We need salt for healthy bodies as well as to flavor and preserve food.
Before refrigeration salt was used to can vegetables and preserve meat from spoil. Salt’s main purpose is to preserve.
Since the fall of man in the garden of Eden, the whole creation has been cursed and is spiritually rotten. The only thing in this world not rotten by sin is the Holy Spirit and the new nature that is in ever blood bought saint. That is why we are to be the salt of the earth. We are salt by our testimony and out walk with God before men.
As we stand boldly for the truth of God’s word we are preserving the earth. The only thing that is holding back total judgement from God is the salt. At the rapture, the salt will be removed and nothing will preserve the earth then. Our verse also says that salt can loose its savour or flavor. Salt that has no savour cannot be used as a preservative. It is useless. Saved people lose their savour when they conform to the world and get so much like the world that you cannot tell them from the world.
We must fight daily the attack on our minds not to get like the world. The verse also asks the question (wherewith shall it be salted?) The only people who have the ability to be biblical salt are saved people. No one else can be salt for us. The best this world’s system can produce is far from God’s standards.
Religious people are not salt. You can have a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof. Just take a look at the miserable failure of our anti-God social programs in our country.
They have helped little and cost much. out nation now has a humanist view instead of a biblical worldview.
We are also the light of the world. The whole world lies in darkness and the only ray of light is the elect of God. Oh God, help us to shine brighter as it gets darker and darker.
