Dear Editor

In the November 1st issue of the newspaper, Brother Chad Johnson wrote in his Devotional that the first pope of Rome was Leo I (440-461). Roman Catholic tradition, however, traces the popes from St. Peter (32-67) who Jesus said would build his Church. “And I tell you, you are Peter (which means rock), and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.” (Matt 16:18) In the listing of popes there were 44 popes before Leo I. During the papacy of Leo I an official title for the pope became Bishop of Rome. The Roman Catholic Church like many other denominations traces its heritage back to Jesus and New Testament times.
