The Russellville Panther football team will travel to Mayfield tonight to face the Cardinals in the third round of the playoffs. The Panthers were defeated by the Cardinals earlier in the season, but tonight they play to fix their mistakes and move on toward the state championship.

So far both teams have had it easy in the playoffs. In the first round of the playoffs the Panthers won their first game against the Kentucky Country Day Bearcats 55-6. The Cardinals defeated the Caverna Colonels 57-14. Last week, the Panthers defeated the Bethlehem Eagles last week with a win of 50-14 while the Cardinals knocked off the Holy Cross Cougars 35-0.

Earlier in the season these two teams faced each other, and even though the Panthers would lead most of the first half, the Cardinals came back to win 42-21.

“We are excited about the opportunity to face Mayfield again. This should be one heck of a football game. Our kids have been working for this moment for a very long time and it is now time to take advantage of the opportunity,” said head coach John Myers. “We know the mistakes we made in our first meeting and we are working hard to make adjustments and correct those mistakes.”

The Panthers will travel to the home of the Mayfield Cardinals tonight. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
