The Russellville Panther football team will face their toughest opponent yet this season. For most of the year, the Panthers have been ranked the number two team in the state in Class A behind the Mayfield Cardinals. Tonight the Panthers will travel to the home of the Cardinals in the biggest game of the year.
So far this year, the Panthers have gone undefeated after winning eight straight games. The Panthers offensive has scored 35 or more points every game this year and the defense has worked hard to prevent any team from taking a victory away from the Panthers.
“To be honest we have approached this game just like any other. We put a strong emphasis on every single game, but we all realize there is a little more hype and a little more at stake when you are talking about a district game and playoff seeding being involved,” said head coach John Myers. “The kids have prepared well this week and are excited about the opportunity and challenge of playing against our district rival.”
Like coach John Myers said, the Panthers are treating this game like any other. The Panthers are going to continue to do what they have been all season and play their game and hopefully come out on top.
“We won’t change in what we do and Mayfield won’t change in what they do. We want to run the football and I feel that if we can sustain our blocks just long enough to get our backs some running room we can make things difficult for Mayfield,” said Myers. “However, they have a very strong defense, a wide open offense that can score at any time, several playmakers, and tremendous special teams. We have to minimize our mistakes and take advantage of scoring opportunities.”
The Panthers put their hard work to the test tonight as they travel to Mayfield to face the Cardinals tonight at 7 p.m.
