Sheryl Markham, coordinator with Logan County Adult Education, attended Tuesday’s Logan County Fiscal Court meeting to talk about the the Talent Assessment Program and the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE). Before delving into the program, Markham mentioned some of the other programs offered by Adult Education including: ABE/GED classes, educational opportunities, English as a Second Language (ESL), National Career Readiness Certification, family education and detention center based education.

Talent assessments are also called pre-employment tests or employment screening tests. They are used to help employers identify candidates that will be a good fit for jobs at their company. Talent assessments help predict a new hire’s on-the-job performance and retain ability, so, in theory, applicants that pass the screening test should perform better as employees if they’re hired.

Some companies test applicants for employment to determine if the candidate is a good match for the jobs they are hiring for. Companies who conduct pre-employment tests (talent assessments) are seeking applicants that match their hiring criteria. Talent assessments are used as part of a screening process that help employers decide which candidates to interview. Many large companies like Macy’s, PetSmart, Bloomingdales, Sears, Express Scripts, Radio Shack, Walmart, and Burger King, just to mention a few, use pre-employment testing.

TABE is a diagnostic test used to determine a person’s skill levels and aptitudes. Many companies use it in hiring, promotions, or for selecting employees for training programs for skilled positions. The TABE test is also used by public service agencies who are guiding people into adult educations programs (Logan County Adult Education uses this diagnostic testing), such as getting a GED, going to trade school, etc.

TABE tests skills and aptitudes in reading, math, and English, as you apply them in the workforce or classroom. Although there is really no such thing as passing or failing the TABE test, your score can determine your eligibility for many programs that can have a positive effect on your life situation, and a huge impact on your future income. The test takes about an hour and a half to complete.

Logan County Adult Education will give these tests, for free, as part of the Logan County pre-employment talent assessment program. Logan County Adult Education Center can conduct thorough assessment reviews and testing for the job seekers interest and skills prior to referral to the employer.

Markham would like Logan County’s Fiscal Court to join others in the community who utilize the Talent Assessment program and TABE as a tool to not only help place possible employees into positions needed in the county, but also to take advantage of the resources available to help promote the workforce.

Although no concrete decisions were made Tuesday regarding the Assessment and TABE program, members of the fiscal court will be asking county attorney Joe Ross to look into the program further before changing its personnel policies that may, if participation ensues, require possible new hires to undergo assessment testing to identify their strengths and skills.
