The Stevenson Elementary School site-based decision making council is asking for parent input for the selection process of hiring the next principal.
The council met last week and came up with seven criteria that it will be looking at when deciding the next principal for Stevenson. Now they are asking SES parents to fill out a short survey so that they know which of the criteria are most important to parents and caregivers of the children in the school.
“I think it’s important that parents play a part in this,” said Russellville Independent schools superintendent Leon Smith. “The council being serious about the process and is looking forward to the parents’ input.”
The seven criteria the council came up with are:
- An effective principal understands the connection of school culture to student achievement.
- An effective principal is committed to closing achievement gaps and ensuring proficiency for all students.
- An effective principal believes in and will support adjusting instructional practices to meet various student learning styles and levels.
- An effective principal believes in and understands developmentally appropriate instruction and continuous progress for all students.
- An effective principal welcomes input and will be a model of good communication among all the stakeholders of the school community: parents, students, teachers, administrators, and the community at large.
- An effective principal treats all people with respect and dignity.
- An effective principal acts with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.
The survey, which can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/B59TXV5, also includes an optional comments box where parents can let the site-based council know any thoughts or feelings that they have regarding the next principal at Stevenson.
“I hope all parents will take the time to fill that in,” said Smith.
The surveys will be completely confidential and must be filled out by this Wednesday. The council will be looking at the results and discussing them at a meeting that evening at 4 p.m.
Smith said that several applications have come in for the position so far. The deadline to applications in is the end of this week.
“We’re not getting them as fast as we did last year, but most people tend to wait until the last week to get their applications in,” Smith said. “So we’re expecting to get several in this week. And it only takes one good one to fill the job.”
Russellville schools will be on spring break next week, but upon returning the site-based council hopes to move quickly with the selection process.
“We’ve tentatively set a target date of April 18 to have a new principal hired,” Smith said. “That’s not a hard and fast date though. When we get back from spring break, we will be looking very critically at the applications and then start the interview process.”
