The Great Reformation and the Lord’s True Church
Bro. Chad Johnson Russellville Baptist Church
And I say also unto thee, that thou are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18 KJV
On Oct. 31, 1517, a Catholic monk named Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church at Wittenberg. As Martin Luther began to study the Bible, he realized that salvation is freely bestowed on sinners by God’s sovereign grace.
In his 95 theses he protested many other false doctrines of the Catholic Church. This was the beginning of the reformation period.
The very doctrine that Lutherans teach today indicates that Martin Luther did not truly believe grace. From 1517 as the reformation period began, many new so-called churches were born.
The Lutheran Church 1520 AD, the Church of England or Episcopal Church 1534 AD, the Presbyterian Church 1536 AD, the Congregationalists 1580, the Methodist Church 1739, the Church of Christ 1827 AD.
There are several other denominations that were started in more recent years. All of these reformation churches came from the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church began around 300 AD and was a gradual departure from apostolic teachers and God’s word.
Leo I became the first Pope of Rome. From 500 AD to 1500 AD, a period known as the dark ages, an apostate church had risen to power and was committing fornication with the Kings of the earth. Rev. 17:1
Even during the dark ages, there remained churches as sects which maintained the pure doctrines of Christ. Sometimes she was called Waldensians, Petrobrusians, Henricians, Ana-Baptist and today she is called Baptist.
We do not make our claim of the true church on our name, but on our doctrine and our founder, Jesus Christ.
Our text said that Christ would build His church and this He did during His earthly ministry. Jeses was baptized by John the Baptist and John also baptized all of the apostles who were the first members of the church. I Corinthians 12:28
Christ cannot lie and He started His church 500 years before the Roman Catholic Church came to power. If there has been a time since Christ started His church that the true church was not here, then Christ has lied.
The gates of hell has two meanings. First, governments in the Bible days operated in the gates of the city. Christ was saying that wicked governments that as Rome did take on a form of godliness would not stop his church. Also the death of men would not put His church out of business. He will have a remnant in His church until the rapture.
