Over 600 people came out Tuesday, Aug. 11 to the Annual Southern States Customer Appreciation Day/Joint Annual Meeting held at the Coop on Bethel Street in Russellville.
Southern States hosts an appreciation day each year to highlight those who have supported the Coop throughout the year. A meal was served for customers which included: ribeye sandwiches, backed beans, coleslaw, chips, and a drink provided by the Logan County Cattleman’s Association. Ice cream was also served thanks to Buddy Wooldridge, who brought out a humongous homemade cedar ice cream maker big enough to feed hundreds. Several door prizes were also given away at this time.
After the meal is served, Southern States holds its annual meeting to elect board members and go over the annual report. The Coop also hands out refund checks to the patrons for their service throughout the year. The board declares how much to refund each year depending on the net.
The Coop organized in 1949 and has 6,794 farmer members, said Tim Markham, Manager of Southern States. Markham has been with the Coop for 12 and a half years.
“Each year we like to give a thanks for the patronage of all the members,” said Markham. “We like to provide them with a meal and show them how much they mean to us.”
