8th of August Emancipation Celebration big success


Annual event attracts large crowds

He stressed the importance of teaching our children, “If we don’t know who we are, others will tell us who we are,” in said in his brief address to the crowd.

Russellville celebrated the 29th annual Emancipation Celebration over the weekend with large crowds gathering in Hampton Park on Saturday for the bulk of the festivities.

The festival, better known as the “Eighth of August” kicked off on Thursday and had some Friday events, but Saturday is always the biggest day.

This year’s theme was “The Best Time of My Life.”

Friday activities included the Taste of Culture grilling and bake sale at Kathy’s Hair Salon on 9th Street. There will also be grilling and vendors at the KP Hall on East 5th Street and a concert featuring the the music of Ray Charles and Mary Ann Fisher.

Saturday events included the Opening and Flag Ceremony, a parade, men’s softball, men’s dustbowl basketball, children’s inflatables, music, concessions and vendors.
