If you have ever seen the Antiques Roadshow on PBS and thought you wished you could find out what some of your treasured items are worth, now is your chance.
South Union Shaker Village is hosting an “Appraisal Day” Saturday, Aug 22 from 10-4 p.m. at ground level of the Centre House, 850 Shaker Museum Road in Auburn. The event will be very similar to what you have seen on television, however, the group appraising at this event is Case Auction House out of Tennessee.
Case Antiques, Inc. is based in Knoxville, Tenn., where their gallery is located, with a satellite office in Nashville, Tenn., but their reach is worldwide. They conduct cataloged auctions of investment, quality art and antiques under the stewardship of knowledgeable professionals, including two accredited appraisers on staff.
Some of the items they will be looking to appraise include: paintings, southern decorative arts, pottery, silver, historical documents and maps, civil war memorabilia, historic weapons, fine porcelain, textiles, native American and Asian decorative arts, jewelry, furniture, ect. Nothing is too big or too small.
If you have a piece that is too big to carry to the event, you can bring photographs for the appraisers to look at.
This is the first time the South Union Shaker Village has hosted such an event. Executive Director Tommy Hines said he has known other historic sites to do this kind of event, but it’s a first for Shaker Village.
This is a fundraising effort for the South Union Shaker Village, said Hines. There will be a $10 charge per item appraised and all funds generated will go to the South Union Shaker Village.
“An historic site requires a significant amount of funds to keep up and in tip-top shape,” said Hines. “We use a lot of funding for restoration and care of buildings on the property. We also use it for the wonderful display of Shaker artifacts.”
The event is sure to draw a crowd, so you may want to get there early. There will be two appraisers on duty to give you their opinion, so the wait should not be long. The event is being held in an air-conditioning building, said Hines, so at least you will be comfortable.
“I’ve been going through my home to see the pieces I’d like to have appraised,” said Hines. “You always wonder about the stuff you have and how much it may be worth.”

“We invite everyone to come out to the first “Appraisal Day” at South Union Shaker Village,” said Hines. “We think it will be a fun-filled day.”
